Gambit set for a standalone film?

Channing Tatum reveals the current plans for the character.

For those expecting Channing Tatum to step into the role of Gambit for the first time in X-Men: Apocalypse, you may be quite surprised to hear what is currently being discussed.

There has long been rumours that Tatum will be playing the Cajun mutant, thanks in no small part to the actor and X-Men producer, Laura Shuler Donner’s respective desires for it to happen, and fans had naturally assumed that this inevitable casting would lead to the character making his first appearance* in the upcoming Apocalypse movie.

Speaking with MTV while out promoting his new movie22 Jump Street, Tatum has revealed the current ideas being discussed for Gambit’s big screen appearance. “Creatively, we’re starting to chug forward. Obviously there’s nothing official,” he said, basically confirming that he is all but cast for the role. “There are only conversations and dreams right now, really.”

“We’ve talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the ‘hero’ superhero movie. Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He’s a thief. He walks on the grey. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones.”

So there you have it, despite the divisive casting and the lukewarm success of the two Wolverine spin-off films, Fox are looking to bring Gambit out for his own adventure. What do you think? Sound off in the comments below.

*SPOILERS: The events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine have been wiped out by the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, so Tyler Kitsch’s Gambit no longer exists in the timeline.
