Star Wars: Episode VII is still a year and a half away from release, yet its sequel now has a director attached. Rian Johnson has signed with Disney and Lucasfilm to write and direct Episode VIII, and will also pen a treatment for Episode IX – possibly with an eye to directing that movie as well.
Johnson has an excellent resume, being the man responsible for 2012’s sleeper hit Looper. He is also the man behind Brick and numerous episodes of Breaking Bad.
His appointment follows a recent trend of talented young genre directors helming Star Wars movies, with Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and Josh Trank (Chronicle, Fantastic Four Reboot) both signing on to direct spin-off movies.
First though, Episode VII is released on December 18, 2015. In current plans, Episode VIII is due in 2017.
