Last week it looked like Community‘s dream of six seasons and a movie was over, when Hulu ended negotiations for the show’s return, but now comes the news that fans had been waiting for. Community will get a sixth season, picked up by Yahoo Screen.
“I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo,” show creator Dan Harmon said in the statement. “I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!”
The timing of yesterday’s announcement couldn’t have been any more perfect, as the deals of the cast were due to run out that day, leaving them free to find work elsewhere. Now the crew will produce 13 episodes for what will presumably be the final season.
Previous attempts by Sony to find a home for their show at Comedy Central and Hulu proved unsuccessful, but the production company have shown a tenacity for getting their shows on air. Netflix had surprisingly shown no interest in the cult comedy, so chances were looking slim until this news came out of left field.
Just a movie deal left to find now then…
