Floyd Mayweather Says He Will Rematch Marcos Maidana

Ever since his hard fought scrap with Marcos Maidana on May 3, boxing fans have wondered whether Floyd Mayweather would grant the Argentinian a rematch. Now it seems the pound-for-pound legend is set to step back in between the ropes to face off with him again this September.

Speaking at the BET Awards on Monday, Mayweather confirmed that his return to the ring on September 13 will be a rematch against Maidana. Speaking to¬†The Daily Mail, he said “September 13, back to business, Marcos Maidana vs Floyd Mayweather Part II.”

Their first clash saw Maidana (35-4, 31 KO) get more physical with Mayweather (46-0, 26 KO) than nearly all of his previous opponents but he had no arguments with the cards that saw Mayweather get the majority decision (117-111, 116-112, 114-114).

Perhaps even more interesting was his follow-on comment. “Then in May, I’ll have a big surprise for you.”

Considering that the newspaper is British, it is possible that the long-rumoured showdown with Amir Khan in Wembley could be what the former pound-for-pound king is alluding to.

The long-shot is the dream match that has been long sought and always rears its head with news like this: Manny Pacquiao. But as usual, even with the recent shake-up at Golden Boy, Mayweather’s issues with Bob Arum will keep a fight with any Top Rank stars unlikely.
