Bennett Miller’s follow-up to Academy Award nominated Moneyball received universal plaudits when it was showed off at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. There is little doubt that Miller is hoping to put forward his latest, Foxcatcher, for the award season accolades.
Foxcatcher tells the real-life story of wealthy philanthropist John du Pont (Steve Carell), who recruits wrestlers Mark and Dave Schultz (Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo) with the idea of creating a US wrestling team for the 1988 Seoul Olympics with them as the trainers. However, the trio’s tale heads to an unexpected tragic ending.
Many have questioned whether Sony Classics will push Carell or Tatum forward for Leading Actor awards, or perhaps even both against each other, and the latest round of media promotion may suggest that they are taking the surprise route of Tatum. His performance has been highly praised but Carell is virtually unrecognisable in his performance, leaving behind the usual comedy chops in a chilling turn.
There is always the possibility that Tatum is the recognisable draw, so this may be the mainstream focus to draw in viewers. Carell still remains the first name billed on the poster, so looks to be rightly placed as the main star. Either way, Sony Classics have today released a new teaser trailer that focuses on Tatum’s Mark Schultz (above). Earlier this week Tatum was also the focus of a new poster, which can be seen below alongside the first poster released that centred on Carell’s du Pont.
Foxcatcher is looking at a November 14, 2014 release date in the United States, but the UK will have to wait until January 9, 2015. As well as Carell, Tatum and Ruffalo the film also features Sienna Miller, Vanessa Redgrave, Anthony Michael Hall and Brett Rice. See the official trailer for the film below.
